Across the Street from the AM/PM at Twelfth Avenue and East Jefferson Street, Fifteen Minutes Past Ten, Sunday Night

a glass-walled shoe-box diorama—
racks of cigarettes, gum, and chips,
glass-doored coolers filled with
beer, cheap wine and party ice
—a sterile white hole in the night

black hoses snake out,
plunge snouts into the sides
of yellow and orange taxis
drawn to the pumps
like insects to a bright flower

alone under the street light
the thin mist of my breath
floats for a moment
in the still night air

two young men pass
eating burgers out of orange
and red foil bags
I hesitate, one foot off the curb
